Forestry mulching in Mount Gilead means working Morrow County ground. Mount Gilead is the county seat and the largest village, with 3,503 people counted in 2020. The county around it covers 406 square miles, sixteen townships and seven incorporated villages. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources traces this ground to the Ice Age. Near Mount Gilead three end moraines converged, and they account for the rolling terrain at the state park. The 13.5 acre Mt. Gilead Lake sits there on Sam's Creek, which feeds Whetstone Creek. The Kokosing watershed covers 482 square miles and drains part of Morrow County toward Knox and Coshocton. Farms in the county hold 11,544 acres of woodland. Much of that is a creek bottom woodlot behind a barn. Down there the light is good, and honeysuckle, multiflora rose and grapevine take it.
We run a tracked loader instead of a wheeled machine. The tracks spread the weight, so the mulcher crosses a soft bottom and climbs a bank without tearing it up. Wet spring clay is the one stretch we sometimes steer around, because tracks can leave ruts. Late summer through winter is prime clearing season here, and frozen ground carries the machine cleanly. Under a canopy we do underbrush removal along the creek, flag your keeper trees and work between them. What is left is a chip layer that breaks down into the soil and holds the bank against washing.
Parcels here have gotten small. Of the county's 821 farms, 389 run 10 to 49 acres. Another 96 run 1 to 9 acres. The county describes itself as a bedroom community. By its own count, 78 percent of residents commute out to Mansfield, Delaware, Mount Vernon or Columbus for work. Two Interstate 71 interchanges carry that drive, and one of them is the State Route 61 exit at Marengo. When the truck leaves at six and gets back at six, five acres of briars wins the summer.
An overgrown field going back to grass is pasture reclamation. County farms still carry 5,708 acres of pastureland and 1,570 horses and ponies. On hunting ground we do food plot clearing and open old plots back up. Hunters checked 2,767 deer in Morrow County in the 2025 to 2026 season. The three year average is 2,236. Rose and honeysuckle resprout from the stump, so plan to mulch once and keep it down with brush hogging. The chip layer holds regrowth back for a season or two while it breaks down into the soil.
