The Ohio Division of Wildlife manages about 1,113 acres there, including a 160 acre lake. The state has improved its habitat partly by cutting trees in fencerows and woodlot borders. That work builds brushland habitat. Rabbits and pheasants on the area are most abundant along fencerows and field dividers. On hay ground or pasture, the goal runs the other way. You want the fence row open and the field edge back.

The big woodlot at Kokosing Lake is mostly pin oak and hickory. On your own woodlot, you choose which trees stay. Under the canopy, underbrush removal in the woodlot clears brush and small stems. We flag the keepers and work around them. The mulcher takes stems up to about 6 inches. Stems of 6 to 10 inches go slower and are often workable selectively. Larger timber is tree service work, not ours. What is left is open woods with a chip layer over the soil.
